What a lot of stories for a sweet!
Would you have guessed that it was only at the beginning of the 17th century that the first sweets were made: barley sugar, fruit or liquorice pastels…? As for HARIBO sweets, it wasn’t until 1920 that they made their first appearance. This was the brand name whose three syllables came directly from its founder, Hans Riegel, and his native town of Bonn. He made his special sweets in a laundry room while his wife delivered them on her bicycle! We’ve all got stories to tell about sweets, but it is here in this museum that you’ll learn their real story.
Interactive and sensational experience!
In the “From raw materials to pleasure” display area you can take an interactive stroll through a world of edible delights. To begin with, the sugar arch will show you all the secrets of the one ingredient, next, in the film projection area, you step onto a walkway which takes you directly into all the sounds and sights associated with production. And finally, there are “the senses trees” where you can play at recognizing your favourite sweets with the help of some great interactive display technology.
Come and discover all our trade secrets, well almost…
Making such good sweets is simple… first you must take the best of what nature provides – like sugar, the root of of the liquorice plant and a host of other ingredients, some of which help to maintain quality and product life. Having selected these, HARIBO adds the personal touch. This combination of high tech and traditional methods is revealed in full inside the museum.
When sweets go public
The museum presents one of the most impressive collections of old advertising posters and lithographs which were specifically created to promote and sell sweets. To accompany this collection, the interactive information points allow you to understand these works of art.
